LIFELINE – ‘Endgame Groupthink’ cassette

Only release by short-lived Montreal crust-punk group. Five riff-heavy bleak songs of angry, disturbing, metal infused crust. The guitar work definitely keeps your attention on these songs, complete with catchy riffs, down-tuned chugs, and even the occasional pinch harmonic. While I may not entirely be sure what their self-proclaimed genre term of necro crust is, with the use of such terminology I was expecting the production on this recording to be a lot more lo-fi and fucked up sounding. Don’t get me wrong, this recording doesn’t come off as sounding pleasant by any means, aside for the surprisingly pretty intro to “No Quarter”, but it is a very crisp and professional sounding recording. You can audibly discern every note, every drum hit, every snarling line being wretched out. In my opinion, a band this scary and disturbing sounding should have their inherent filth oozing into the production of their recordings as well. A small gripe as I am glad this tape exists. With a demo this solid and having seen a few of the shows in this bands brief LIFELINE, truly a shame the band ended up being so momentary.
