ECFU – ‘Electric City Fuck You’ demo re-release cassette

Extremely limited-run posthumous cassette discography from the Capital Region of New York state. The full output of the band was a demo cassette released right around the turn of the century and now also a live recording of the final ECFU set. Of course I should mention that the band featured future members of ACID REFLUX, THE JURY, LIMPWRIST, and more, but I would rather focus on other aspects of this wonderful release. ECFU were an endearingly shitty band who played sloppy, fast, hardcore-punk. The kind of band that, for better or worse, really does not exist anymore in the modern day. Snotty juvenile lyrics about wanting to retire at 20 years old and move back in with your folks, hating New York City, multiple songs about bombs, and a number of songs about things that “suck”. The highlight of the live set on the B-side of the cassette is a GRAND FUNK RAILROAD cover with lyrics reworked to be more applicable to themselves: “We are a terrible band / We are a terrible band / We’re coming to your town, you’re gonna be let down / We are a terrible band”. This release also comes with a flyer zine documenting a bunch of gigs ECFU played during their existence featuring some pretty damn heavy hitters! How fun to see that the likes of IRON LUNG, NO FUCKER, SKIT KIDS, CAREER SUICIDE, DROPDEAD and more all at one point in time undeniably blew ECFU off the stage! It is truly a bummer to me that my time touring and playing gigs in the Capital Region must have been just slightly after the existence of this band. With copies limited to a mere 25, at least I was lucky enough to receive one of this important offering from Brain Slash Records.

On a personal note, I did not realize until reviewing this cassette that Schenectady, NY was once referred to as ‘Electric City’. I must say that I have major doubts that such a nickname would have been earned were it not for help from my hometown, Buffalo, NY. Once known as ‘The City Of Light’, Buffalo was one of the first cities in the country with electricity thanks to nearby Niagara Falls. If this stands correcting, please shine some light on it for me.
